Conversations over Coffee: New Britain Branch Manager Jan Karpowicz

As the branch manager for the Polam Federal Credit Union branch in New Britain, Connecticut, Janek Karpowicz definitely has his hands full running the only Polam FCU branch on the East Coast. And not only has he successfully managed his branch for the last 11 years, he and Polam also work to make huge strides for the Polish-American community in New Britain.

“The world of banking is full of competition,” Janek told us. “Our New Britain branch strives to be the best. This starts with the relationship we build with our customers and the community outreach we provide.”

Janek, who completed his master’s degree at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, served as Treasurer of the Polish-American Business & Professional Association, Inc. after transferring to the East Coast. He didn’t know many people in the local community, namely in the local Polish community, and he saw the association as the perfect opportunity to meet new people, as well as inform the community about Polam FCU and bring in new clients to his branch.

Along with his team members, Beata and Alicja, Janek holds a monthly staff meeting to plan and go over different ways to promote community relations. Each month they seek out more local outreach; they’ve set up informative booths in some of the largest Polish markets in New Britain to promote Polam FCU, and have taken part in the annual Little Poland Festival. Polam also has a Facebook page to market their services to an online audience, as well as promote special offers and deals through their branch.

The New Britain branch also held a lunch for the Polam’s CEO, Mark Chrzanowski, to discuss business matters and future goals for the East Coast location.

Janek enjoys camping, biking and skiing, and is a big fan of visiting Montreal. He visits the Canadian city four times a year to “enjoy the city,” staying in small hotels and visit the old part of the city. There are three places he dreams about visiting – China, Japan and Cuba. Fortunately, Janek will be visiting Cuba later this year.

“My management philosophy is to provide an environment that leads to productive employees and happy long-lasting customers,” Janek said. It certain looks like he’s getting the job done.
